The Shoreham Angling Squad

Written by Pedro Farrington.

Update: 25th January 2007

Storms Couldn't Stop Fishathon!

Members of the Sussex based Shoreham Angling squad braved gusting winds of 40mph and mountainous seas to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust charity.

Seventeen anglers from the club fished from 6pm until 12am on Friday 19th January 2007. Six teams fished at six different locations from Brighton to Selsey and struggled in horrendous conditions while the public watched live up to the minute reports on the popular angling website Worldfishing.com

Funds were raised by the website viewers who called a charity phone line set up by the event organiser Mike Harwood. Mike is also a member of the Shoreham Angling Squad. Mike states that the website received an amazing 1500 individual hits and expects the evening to have raised approximately £800 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. People ‘tuned in’ from all over the world to see how the brave anglers faired in the Sussex storms. A range of anglers and abilities took part in the ‘fishathon’ including a grandfather and grandson team with the most senior team member being 59 years old and the youngest team member being 15 years old.

Mike Harwood says, “I would like to thank all of the anglers, The Shoreham Angling Squad, WSF and Penn fishing. Without all of their help the event would not have been possible”.

Update 17th January 2007

Anglers Brave Elements (Ma or What !!!)

Shoreham Angling Squad, whose aim is to keep the West Arm of the harbour clean and fisherman friendly, held their first competition on Sunday 7th January in appalling conditions. 15 brave, hardy and possibly downright stupid members of the newly formed club began their quest in a force 6 South Westerly, but half an hour in, the wind had gone round to the South and 3 hours before the high tide, waves were already crashing over the arm showering the poor soles.

Update: 9th January 2007

Shoreham Angling Squad, whose aim is to keep the West Arm of the harbour clean and fisherman friendly, held their first competition on Sunday 7th January in appalling conditions. 15 brave, hardy and possibly downright stupid members of the newly formed club began their quest in a force 6 South Westerly, but half an hour in, the wind had gone round to the South and 3 hours before the high tide, waves were already crashing over the arm showering the poor soles.

Within sight of Shoreham’s RNLI inshore lifeboat carrying out manoeuvres in the harbour mouth they fished on, hoping that the next match, in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust on the 19th January would fair better. A few fish were being caught, but nothing to write home about, small rockling and the odd whiting. By midday, rogue waves coming over the arm were sending tackle boxes afloat, safety was now paramount and the decision to call a halt was made.

The competition was won by Andy Timms with a 30cm whiting.  Grahame Carter, Treasurer of the club said “I think, given the conditions, it was a good showing by our members”.

We hope for fairer weather next time, more especially for our charity event. Shoreham Angling Squad are planning a live fishathon in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust on the 19th January beginning at 6:00pm and we hope to raise a lot of money for this worthwhile charity

This type of event is unique with live updates throughout the evening on  www.worldseafishing.com  ( under South Coast Forum ) as to the progress of the anglers in their efforts to record good catches..  The first trial of this event, held on 1st December, produced over 1500 views with viewers from as far away as Bangkok..  Viewers will be able to phone in on dedicated charity line to pledge donations for Teenage Cancer Trust .

The Squad are hoping to include more competitions in the future to promote their cause of a cleaner environment on the West Arm and this will also include specialist days for disabled anglers and juniors.
