The Green Jackets is situated on the Upper Shoreham Road near to Buckingham Park. A great garden area for the summer crowd, especially as you get loads of sun directly on the garden right up until sunset!. Superb range of food and friendly bar staff. Can get busy during the day, due to the popularity of the lunch menu.
Me and my girlfriend went in there for a meal and it was great. The food was lovely and good value for money. The only thing is that its really quiet during the week and theres not a lot of atmospehere, but we made up for it lol ;-) Thanks to the lady who served us and remembered by need for ketchup.....
I'm somewhat surprised by the recent reviews here as my experience couldn't have been more different. I've been in there numerous times and Dermott, Leo and Lucy (the staff names I can remember) were extremely friendly, polite and helpful. The food was perfect (ham, egg and thick chips) and the only possible negative was that we couldn't use the large sun terrace or garden as it was raining.
I'm really at a loss to understand how people can experience such two different extremes - could it have been an off day ?
I have tried this pub twice since it has been under new management and on both ocassions have been very disappointed. The manager was extremely rude, the food was so bad it was inedible and the drinks were overpriced. I will not be going back again!!
Having used the Green Jackets since moving into the area some 5 years ago we have seen a few "under new management" signs in that time. Every time we give the place a go hoping that it has improved, but we are usually disapointed. Last Sunday around 3pm, returning home after a very wet donkey derby in Buckingham Park, we decided to pop in and have a drink and a light meal as we had done on previous occasion. The main bar was under a third full with plenty of empty tables so we proceded to sit down take off our damp coats and procede to order drinks. A tall gentleman in a striking green blazer walked over to us and asked if we had booked a table and we answered in the negative. He said that they were only accepting prebooked guests today and that they were getting ready for the next sittings. He stated that if we wanted we could use the smaller bar to have a drink and order something. As we gathered our coats I casually said that if the main bar was for prebookings only he may think about having a notice on the door to warn customers. To which he rather rudely replied that " This is a resturant I dont have to put up any notices" He then turned and walked off.
Suffice to say we will not be frequenting this public house, until the managemant changes once again.
Now that Jackie and Ray, from Marlipins fame, have taken over at the Green Jackets, they are turning round, what used to be, a rather dismal place to eat and drink.
The food is simply superb and excellent value for money (you've got try the Ham, Egg and Chips!), the service is friendly and quick and the atmosphere is getting better as time goes on.
They have a great outdoor area for those summer afternoon sessions, just one comment though - it would be great to have a gate from the pub garden to the "Green", this would allow those children who want to run around, play football etc , plenty of space to do so.
In the evenings, theres 3 bars, the "Sports Bar" for the younger drinkers, the restaurant bar (which can be quieter later on) but busy during meal times and the snug, for those who simply want to chat and relax - essentially something for everyone.
The GJs has got some bad press in the past, but it seems to have been totally turned around by the Dynamic Duo, that can only be Jackie and Ray (and Amanada of course!). Long may it continue!
