Harry Ricardo's Two Stroke Engine Co
« on: November 20, 2018, 04:12:56 pm »
In this postcard of the riverside you can see lettering on the roof of one of the buildings. Cut it out (digitally) then distort it and you can just make out ‘The Two Stroke Engine Co’ This was where Henry Ricardo had his first ‘factory’ making the ‘Dolphin’ car powered by a two stroke engine

Any ideas as to the date of the postcard view above ?

I have a similar card (extract below) and all I know is that it is pre-footbridge.

If you look at the image with a magnifier, the writing on the roof appears to read:-
''THE TWO STROKE ENGINE Co Ltd.  MOTOR CARS  MOTOR BOATS".

Hi Lofty,
Harry Ricardo started his two stroke engine company in 1909 but when it went bust the High Street factory closed in 1911. A short lived venture but gives you a pretty accurate date for the photo.......... erm, except of course, it may not have been removed from the roof for years after!!

Many thanks Nelson,
I have pencilled the information on to the back of the card.

This may not help too much to pin-down the date of the photos, but the photo EPW000766 contained in BritainFromAbove was taken in 1920. If you zoom in there is no sign of the 'Two Stroke Engine Co'. Perhaps not surprising as 9 years had past since the factory closed and there had been WW1. However, it does slightly help to fix the date of the previous photos.
