Description:
Part of the Admiralty Chart of the south coast. Very little detail but interesting points around Shoreham that could readily be seen and recognised from a ship in the Channel. Drawn at the time of the Napoleonic Wars a signal station can be seen on the Downs behind the town some considerable distance from the shore and undoubtedly relied on the use of a telescope to be seen. Because they were easily seen from the sea two public houses are included – Egypt was a small hamlet south of Kingston long since demolished. Reproduced by permission of the National Maritime Museum.

This Admiralty map firmly places the Signal Station on the Hill East of Mill Hill. The highest point around.
