Since the server upheaval, I'm having a frustrating time getting connected to the site. Typical of today, I was online at 0815 went to reply to a post at about 0830....connection timed out.

Tried Mrs.Crypto's laptop (different web browser) no good. Tried my Android phone, no good therefore nothing to do with my internet connection.

Here I am posting again at 0920. Posted Image

As stated before this has been happening on and off since the server account was suspended.

I know that other people are having the same issues but nobody else has posted them on this site.

Pete, can you log connectivity at all? I'm afraid I know little of servers so can't offer any help other than report the issues.

I am pleased Crypto has post the above as I have a lot of trouble logging in most of the time, I thought it was my pc and was about to get someone in to fix it.

Thanks Crypto you saved me a few bob.

I have experienced not being able to reply to a post now and again. I write my reply but can't get it to post. Probably just as well some might say

I think it's the same for all of us.

I believe Pete's looking for a new host and unfortunately it seems we'll just have to live with it in the meantime.

There's been a lot of talk about low post numbers...due to animosity of forum members but really I'm just so fed up with not being able to post directly myself. I've just spent about 20 minutes carefully crafting a response to a post, trying not to upset anybody and then I lost connection yet again.

It really is hopeless. For a newcomer, they will never try again, for a long term poster like myself, we shrug our shoulders and try one more time, but for how much longer?

I'm sure Pete and Paul are aware of the problem and are trying to find a fix ie new server host, but it's got to happen soon before the site dies... Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

I don't want to appear negative or slagging off the site but when I click on "add reply" will this one go?

I can't believe it's been going on for so long now.

No doubt there are good reasons, but it would be nice if there was an update on how things are going.

That's why it would be good to get Pete along to the meet up.

P.

Hi Everyone,

Paul O is right, I should have updated you all ages ago, so my apologies!

As you may remember the whole SBS site was moved to a new server by the host as there was some malicious software found within our files. The software has now been removed and the site is steady once more.

Unfortunately connection issues to the new server remain, with problems (for everyone) connecting to the site. I am receiving Internal Server errors and MySQL connection errors and I have contacted the host on a daily basis to try and get these resolved, with little success so far. Apparently the current host has just been bought out by a larger company and this is a transition period, so ALOT of issues seem to have been put to one side while they get their house in order. This has resulted in really poor service, both from a host and customer service perspective.

I've seen alot of comments regarding changing hosts and while this is a high priority, I simply do not have the £400 or so to pay for a new host and someone (a web programmer) to successfully move the site to a new host. I have looked at various hosts and for a site, as large and complex, as this one, the yearly hosting fee is around £120.00 and a reliable programmer is £250 ish. I'm trying to save the money as quickly as possible, however this is not a fast process.

I sincerely apologise for the problems in service and I am looking to resolve them as soon as possible. All I can ask if that you all "Keep the Faith" - things will get better.

Regards,

Pete

Thanks for the update Pete.

Sounds like it's whip round time.

OK, I'm in for £50. Anyone else?

As for finding a programmer, it would be good to find someone local. That way they would feel a degree of ownership, and might continue to support the site in the future. Can you make a list of the technical requirements they'd need, and I can then put out some feelers...

Hi Paul,

Very generous of you but I'm thinking of raiding the holiday fund :-)

I do infact, have a reliable (and cost effective) programmer in mind and hes completed alot of successful work for me in the past. Hes not local and in fact lives in Pakistan, but hes prompt, reliable and know the ins and out of the SBS set-up.

I appreciate your offer of putting the word out, however I'd prefer to stick with my guy.

Cheers,

Pete

Through Pete's and Paul's (Osborne) kindness and help I've had the amazing privilege of being able to build a digital record of Shoreham's history - I'm in.

Understood Pete - it's your ball.

All I'll say is that you've obviously been struggling (the site hasn't been well for some time now), and there's lots of us here willing to help, financially or otherwise. Don't be afraid to ask, or to accept what has been offered!

Don’t know if it helps for Pete to know this but the site seems to go down at regular times each day. The one we’ve just had started at about 8.30am and usually lasts about half an hour. I think another is late afternoonish – useful to know when you’re editing admin or posting on the site otherwise you lose everything you’ve worked on. Why does it go down at regular times I wonder?

You just beat me to it Nelson!

I have also determined that the site goes down at about 0830 and returns sometime after 0900.

Hopefully there's a clue there. Posted Image

I too have noticed the same but usually some time between 0100 - 0130. Again for around 30 minutes.

I found if I compile a response to a post and Add reply quickly it posts OK but if I go off for a while before adding my post it will not let me when I try

So I now save my reply before trying to post so I have not lost the words/post

Can't say I have noticed a time of day patten but will look out for it from now on.

Perhaps that's when the cleaners go into the data server room and unplug something so they can plug in their hoovers?

Was it me or did the site only go down briefly this morning?
