Dribble drool........ Still some confusion in P&R's recollection. 1984? The flyover and rounabout mentioned were definitely in place! I also bought a new Y reg 2.8 Capri from Endevour down there so that was 1983.

I think all of you have cracked the code for me, and I assure all of you I would NEVER have done it myself.

Here's what I think the reality was in 1981 and 1984 (earlier I stated I revisited the south coast in 1985; I was mistaken; it was in 1984).

That, St. Nicholas Lane and its attendant development were not there.

That, the A27 to the west and north was not there.

That, the development west of the Adur and underneath the A27 was not there (is this a goal, or as we colonials would say, a jail, or simply a secure industrial park?).

That, Endeavours, which now appears to be a residence, was much larger and extended farther to the east (where the head of St. Nicholas Lane is), to close proximity to Kathleen's Lodge.

That, Kathleen's Lodge was probably where I lodged.

That, the 283 (Steyning Road) was much more primitive, and over the years was upgraded to connect up with the A27 to the north. My guess is that there was also no roundabout at the Red Lion Inn at the time.

That, I saw only one structure with a thatched roof, and not two, but perhaps because of the length of the one structure I did see, in my memory over the years the elongation erroneously morphed into two structures. (I distinctly recall that I stood right beneath the "soffet" of the thatched roof to study the width and density of the thatching, suggesting the structure came right to the sidewalk, which it does.)

That, when I got to land's end (pun intended) at the eastern end of the Upper Shoreham Road, that was about as far as I could go, in a manner of speaking, and that, indeed, the river was right before me, but unseen. It has occurred to me that the mouth and lower reaches of the Adur must be tidal, and it could have been low tide, which would have made the river even less noticeable.

A huge THANKS to all of you for your interest and assistance. You certainly are one very classy group of people. Just one more of the many reasons I'm an Anglophile. And when I get elected President, the bust is coming back to the Oval Office as first order of business.

Richard, you are correct about that. Falling asleep last night I was thinking about that big green hill on the eastern flank of Lancing College. And something wasnt' right. So I got up and checked out the 1981 Shell map. As you correctly pointed out, according to the 1981 Shell map the A27 was there from east of its intersection with 283 to as far west as east Worthing. Like the river, the A27 must be low enough along the base of Lancing College's east hill that I did not see it as well. And the secure industrial area could have been there as well. Thanks for the correction.
