Rabbets, Bumkins and Buttocks – sounds a bit like bunnies and norty bits doesn’t it but johnjohn and fangio will know what they are and will, in any case, be explained with a superb set of 1886 drawings of a Stow yacht that we recently acquired to be included in an article currently being put together.
Henry Cheal listed 20 Stow vessels and SBS has traced 32 more – some still sail and were notified to us by the current owners. In the hope of finding more Stow yachts and more information on those we have found we’ve set up a provisional article http://www.shorehamb...w-and-sons.html (also accessible on drop-down menus for History Articles, 20th Century on the history portal) so that with that and this post we may stand more chance of hearing from googlers who know of them.
Fingers crossed.

A bit before my time I think....I had only heard of 'rabbets' before in the context of woodworking when one used a rabbet plane for cutting rebates.

I had a RN pal who was a Shipwright, we were neighbours at Thickwood nr Bath,he worked at Foxhill RN depot. He
told me that a Rabbet was entered on official records. It being a functional alteration to the original.

Super photos thanks Detief. Our record of Stow built yachts (and a surprising number like yours still sail) is gradually increasing thanks to people like yourself. We would love to see photos of her under sail when you are able to.
The details we have for her are:- Type –Gaff Cutter built 1884, overall length 12.3m, deck length 9.14m, loaded waterline length 7.68m, beam 2.62m, draft 1.85m and a sail area of 55sq.m. The construction material is noted as Oregon pine on oak with a lead keel. If you have more details - the month she was built or launched, who she was built for, her history of ownership, any refurbishment details, etc., we would be very grateful to know of them.
Thanks again.
Roger

Well done Sir.
You seem very proud of your craft, and rightly so.

What a fantasist finish you have achieved, more like an expensive piece of furniture than a yacht

She looks to good to be put in water,

Well done Detlef.

My family owned this boat for many years from the mid 1960s at that time it had an iron keel not alead one as built we had many good days away on it but it was very hard to sail with few crew the sails were red and it had a diesel engine,a perkins i think . its original colour was a mid blue, when we had it it had an extensive refit many new frames a complete new rudder new keel bolts and many other major structural repairs .i must stress at that time it was probably at the end of its life there is many photographs of this work and without this it probably would not have survived to this day , one thing is missing though there was a carved mascot that was supposed to be under the bowsprit about 60cm long painted red with a beret it .,was always on the boat but never was refitted. My grandfather said it must never leave the boat, i hope its still with it.
