Some of the small screening cinemas in London (often in the basement of hotels) are sublime. Maybe 100 seats at most, huge, comfortable (red leather the last one I visited), and with drinks trays in the arms.

I took my kids to see a film at Ropetackle one Saturday morning. It wasn't even a latest release. 20 mins in the film stuck and after a lot of fuss they started it again from the beginning. Then it got stuck again and they sent someone out to buy a new DVD! It wasn't a great experience, I should have stayed at home!

Saying that the Cornwall Film Festival was brilliant, saw 5 or so short films that I wouldn't normally have seen. And they Cornish Ales in.

Why not come along on Thursday June 28th and give it a try? We are showing the 'Elgar' film, directed by the late Ken Russell. Richard Durrant has kindly offered to introduce the film and who knows there may be a few nibbles. Do you know what Paul, we don't mind a bit of shuffling, we all have to do that on those chairs.

I am sorry that you had a bad experience on that Saturday, but we have verypositive feedback from our Saturday films and theatre performances Perhaps you should have complained at the time. We all have teething problems even if happens later in life.

No assumptions are made. The way to improving is to get feed back both positive and negative. Maybe smeone would have esxplined the problem. The problem of hiring films is that they have been used before. With the Film Club we intend to buy the films new so that problem should not arise again.

As feedback, I would say the film club needs an internet home, a hub. The obvious place would be the Ropetackle web site, *if* that site was more functional, up-to-date and navigable. As an alternative, why not set up a facebook page, a blog (blogger, wordpress, etc), or a site (google sites). Facebook in particular is a good way to build up a social group. There should be information about the club – how it was formed, who to contact, the aims/mission/values/culture of the club. For example, from the list that Richard has posted, it looks like there’s a leaning towards french and romantic cinema. News could be posted, requests/suggestions for new films, vox-pops: “what are your top-ten eighties films?”, “Who is your favourite actor”. This could help engage people with the site and help identify people and their tastes.

It would be interesting to know about the equipment used – projector, screen, blu-ray, etc as this stuff matters to film buffs.

It would be good to know about the format – any introductory talks, post-viewing discussions, special events, whether there are refreshments available.

Crikey! you have given me a lot to think about - all useful stuff. It sounds to me that you should be a member of our committee, needles to say you would be most welcome. There is quite a lot of value addedd that we are considering as we would like to mke this a little more than just a film club. I love your poster but the problem we have is once the programme has been decided we are not allowed to advertise the films as we are running on a non-commercial basis. We can only advertise to members and with in the Ropetackle Centre

Well at least advertising within the Ropetackle centre will keep it secret.


So moving forward, why don't you ditch the poster idea, but then give free membership to one of the forum people here and legitimately forward the list to him. He can then tell his friends, us, all about it, and put the list on this forum. I doubt you will get many takers if you are not allowed to talk about it.... sounds like Fight Club, but Shoreham style!

I don't make the rules about film clubs the Distributors make the rules. You have made a suggestion that I shall look into. Thanks for that.

Ah I understand now. So you have to abide to the same rules as the schools get caught by when they try to show videos - hence the membership thing to circumvent the commercial nature. Presumably that distributor licence costs you. So thinking out of the box here, why don't you use the Ropetackle's licence to show films for money? It is perhaps the only advantage the centre has in that presumably they pay a lot per year to run a cinema yet maybe use that licence infrequently. If they run your films for you you can then advertise as you wish, charge membership as well if you want, but also admission for newcomers and one offs. That way it will encourage attendance and make it fInancially viable. It will also benefit the Ropetackle as it will make them vital to the deal - otherwise you could run the club in any lightproof room with hard chairs.
