You wouldn't like to see it Gerry. It really has ripped the heart out of the town. Just hope it recovers, given one can dodge the cyclist's in a 'pedestrian precinct.'

Hello Richard, It always seemed to me that the town was never built for passing traffic, and the layout goes back to before the construction of the first Norfolk Bridge. Just the thought of the closure of East St is a recipe for disaster. I remember like you when East St was two way traffic...and East St had one of two crossings
with Belisha Beacons.these upset the residents above the flats on the West side of the street, and as a teenager
I ran across the road ignoring the crossing...like most other folk. It was handy for Oldies like me nowadays
hanging grimly on to a walking stick. I would like to see a picture if you can manage to post one...thanks After
reading Nelsons artical about burials in St Mary's churchyard, you would almost reach Oz if a tunnel under
the churchyard was considered.

Again, can't believe I'm saying this (because it seems like the boot's on the wrong foot), but it doesn't seem fair to slag the work off before it's finished, and before we can all see the effect it has on the street.

Thanks for the picture John John, I have to agree with Paul that it probably will look very smart, and improve the area. However the time it has taken, is having a very adverse effect on the trading, and inconvenience on passing with a pram, on the confined space of the pavement....so I can also see why Suzanne is wringing her fingers. I do hope it has a good outcome. Have attached a pic of a Belisha Beacon that used to be by Adurvision,

I wouldn't worry as the whole country seems to be being dug up - a lot of people will be in the same boat.
Just think when it is all completed and the distruption/noise etc forgotten about.
It won't be long now.

Have you seen the thickness of those paving blocks and the depth of the concrete foundations?....more suited to a tank parking area than a pedestrian precinct I would have thought....I wonder what will happen when the Gas/Water/Electricity boys want to do a bit of excavating.

That'll probably be because the tanks from the secret underground bunkers in the southwick tunnel will use them; en route to another secret bunker, across the new suspiciously widened footbridge, to the beach.
Or perhaps because it will only be pedestrian/cycle for a limited time and other larger and heavier vehicles will use it outside those times.
We shall have to wait and see

Why wasn't the Belisha beacon listed ? its been there since the 1950s photo (WSCC PP/SHORM/89.1258)

Also there is a photgraph of a traction engine partially collapsed into a cellar outside the Otter Pub, in East Street, but I cant find it now.

Place your bets now i say October 1 st before its finished. Walking down the other day and looks like the centre of the cobbles right in the middle near Adur vision is causing them problems as it slops up and looks like its not level. Had all there gear out measuring the bricks etc.
