Tried my new camera out in Shoreham Church today, to see how it could handle poor light.

I used a place called KeyPhoto, they supply Schools, councils, police forces etc, but will also supply individuals if you create an account with them

Total cost, including VAT and delivery (24hour!) was £2920, which saved me a massive £600 as they are still going for full whack in the shops (if you can find them!!)

You can buy HK imports on ebay for around the same price, but I'm buggered if I`m risking that amount on something getting flown/shipped half way around the world. Plus Nikon get a bit flaky on Asian warrenty's

The picture above was taken hand held, 1/120sec, at F5 and ISO 5000!!
(This was taken in the church as well, no direct light at all, very, very dark)

No additional post production.

I can take pictures under a 60w bulb at ISO 3200, there is no noise whatsoever, its like shooting in daylight.

I though the grim light in the church would defeat it, but it did not
The camera is simply amazing, and represents a revolution in low light photography.

This shot below, handheld, F2.8, 1/80th sec at ISO 12800, yes thats not a typo, its ISO 12800!!!!!!!!!!!
(no further PP)

Thanks!

To be honest, I was merely testing the cameras performance out and not thinking too much about taking good pictures

Its a real shame the church is all locked up, I could only really stand in the er.. foyer bit and snap from there!

Anyone know who I would need to speak to about getting permission to actually get into the main area and take some proper photos!?

(Obviously I dont attend church very much!!)

Could try the Rev. Standing - phone number's on the board outside - I would assume that he'd have a set of keys and would probably welcome a small donation to the coffers!

Great photos Chavster!

I like Nikon's too. Have you discovered the D_Lighting option which allows recovery of detail in dark shadows?

Looked at it, only applys that to JPG's though, and I tend to shoot raw.

raw files are 14-bit on this baby, so you still have the dynamic range to get the same results with later processing.

I will mess with it further though, as occasionally I shoot jpg and it may be usefull

ouch very nice! I'm a Canon man and am swaying quite significantly - the 5D which is my object of desire is full frame, old tech and expensive and the next one up very expensive - am thinking of changing teams!

I was a Canon man (film) but migrated to Lumix for my first digitals. Now I have a Nikon D80. very nice...but expensive. The D40 looks like a giveaway price though if you are planning to limit the number of lenses you will buy. (better than D40x)

D40 is quite a hamstrung camera, not sure if I¬d recommend one tbh

I just sold my old D70 for £200 (including a 18-200mm Zoom)

the D200 is a serious camera, prices are tumbling due to the new D300. I use the D200 as back up body

Hi Chavster.... I agree that it has a limitation with the range of lenses -hence my caveat In my experience 90% of new DSLR buyers never buy a second lens in which case the D40 fits the bill. - Nikon build and features for point and shoot money is hard to ignore.

Fair comment, besides - bodies are disposable, its the glass that you keep and use year after year! :)

What Lumix you using?

I`m allways on the lookout for a decent compact, use a small Canon but it only shoots jpgs and the quality is not good enough for print.

Leica's are all too expensive, some of the Panasonics look good, similar spec with Leica glass.

Its usefull having something discreet at times, especially on hols!

Very nice !!!....worth re-processing the RAW to bring the burnt out stained glass back though....that'd make a beautiful shot IMHCOO....in my humble Canon owning opinion ;o)

Shot it as .jpg!!! Doh! handheld (1/120 sec @ F8) +1EV just to give it a bit more life.

sadly was just pushing the camera and not really thinking about editing it proper.

Next time I will!

How do you go about setting up an account? Do you need to work in education / forces / etc.?
