A little bit of Harpers Ferry History

The owner of this unique property commissioned the house to be built at the beginning of the new Millennium 2000.  Having always been interested in the American way of life he wanted a house that would not only look aesthetically pleasing with it’s front porch and open plan interior, but also a building that would suit the informal nature of Shoreham Beach.

The American theme is continued throughout the property with numerous artefacts, paintings and memorabilia that Ric has collected on many visits to the States.  Even the name of the house is taken from a small town in West Virginia.

Harpers Ferry is situated at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers and is dominated by the Blue Ridge Mountains. During George Washington’s presidency, a federal armoury was built and the town soon became a prosperous industrial area.  Abolitionist John Brown raided the arsenal in 1859 and the American Civil War followed 18 months later.

The front porch typifies the American timber properties of the East and West coasts of the States.  It has been said that it was the most important area of Southern houses as it was normally too hot inside during the day.  The ‘stoop’ was used for ‘shellin’. shuckin’. romancin’ and fellowshippin’!

Shoreham Beach has an interesting, if not salubrious, history of it’s own.  In the 1920’s the first film studio in England was built near the Church of the Good Shepherd.  It soon became known as ‘Bungalow Town’ as many of the film stars of the day wanted cheap accommodation.  It also had another nickname - ‘Little Bohemia’ - due to the notorious and high-living lifestyle of many of the residents.  With the advent of electricity and a need for larger studios, the industry moved from Shoreham to Ealing, West London.

During the war, many of the original timber houses were knocked down to make way for defences against the enemy as it was thought that Shoreham, with it’s harbour and rail link to London, was a prime target for them.

Amongst the myriad of  architectural styles now present on the Beach, it is refreshing to see that Ric has built a fabulous property that is more reminiscent of those decadent, halcyon days of the past.
