Shoreham Airport Development - Public Exhibition PDF Print E-mail
Written by shoreham1
Shoreham AirportThe public exhibition by "Erinaceous", the new owners of Shoreham Airport regarding the revised proposals for the refurbishment of the listed Terminal Building and associated development at Shoreham Airport went ahead successfully. Gerard Downing sent in his thoughts about the proposals.

Erinaceous put forward their initial development proposals at the Shoreham Airshow in September 2006 and the plans have subsequently been on display at the airport. As a result of the comments received and following ongoing discussions with Adur District Council, West Sussex County Council and other organisations such as the Civil Aviation Authority, revised proposals have been prepared. The proposals feature:

  • Restoration of the listed Terminal Building – the refurbished building will allow improved public access, providing terminal functions and a restaurant on the ground floor, with an aviation club and a function / conference suite above.
  • Aviation square – two new three storey mixed-use buildings flanking the terminal building to provide a focal point at the heart of the airport.
  • Flight centre - a new hangar and serviced office accommodation building.
  • Airside operations buildings - new fire station and air traffic control tower buildings.

The proposals will allow the airport to enhance the quality of passenger facilities alongside the continued use of the existing runway configuration. This will enable the airport to continue to operate as an improved General Aviation aerodrome.

Display boards will show the revised plans and representatives of Erinaceous and Shoreham Airport will be in attendance to answer queries.

There will not be a formal presentation, but it will be an opportunity for those living / working in the area or with an interest in the airport to discuss the proposals and to provide feedback. Members of the public are welcome to drop in anytime in the five hour period.

Feedback from the event will help in the preparation of a planning application for the proposals.

Copies of the display boards will also be available to inspect at Adur District Council Offices from the 5th to the 9th of February, and will also be made available on-line at http://www.shorehamairport.co.uk/ from the 5th February 2007.

Feedback from Gerard Downing -Shoreham-by-Sea

With regard to the exhibition held today 1/2/07 concerning the guiding vision of the regeneration of Shoreham Airport.
I found the exhibition educational and informative, the staff at hand were knowledgeable and courteous.
As to your questions on the feedback form in order here are my comments:

  • ESH needs regeneration, it has gone through a period of stagnation and should be up and ahead of the aviation game.
  • Since moving to Shoreham in '87 I have seen much building take place at the airport, none as sensitive as that proposed.
  • I was surprise that there seemed to be no mention of an upgraded or new runway, surely this will be necessary in for the airport to achieve its' full potential.
  • A significant problem will be access from the south, the present narrow road is too restricting to allow the airport achieve its' full potential.
  • The mix of uses seems reasonable. However I was a little confused as to the purpose of the flats that are proposed. Are these to be for the use of those resident/visiting the airport, or for general sale.
  • Yes, the proposed building seem in the correct scale. Well designed modern buildings will enhance the site and make it more generally acceptable. The new control tower will improve safety and allow a greater range of activity on the aiport.

Erinaceous have come up with these proposals in a short time and I wish them luck in bringing much needed, employment, diversity and prestige to the area.

Yours
Gerard Downing
