Ropetackle, Shoreham-by-SeaThe former Hollywood of the south coast  now has a film venue for the first time in over 40 years as Ropetackle announces its film programme for the autumn season. Shoreham, the home of British film making in the early part of the 20th century hasn’t had a cinema since 1964. Called the Norfolk and then the Ritz it was opened in 1933 actually on the edge of Ropetackle, one of the last films showed there was "From Russia with Love" in 1964. It became a Bingo Hall and a warehouse before it was demolished in 1970 ! Shoreham Beach also  once housed  a large movie studio and was home to famous actors and film makers up to the 1920’s as part of the prolific Sealight film company. To read more and to see this autumns movie schedule, click on the link below.

The early movie makers lived in chalets and sheds on the Beach and it became known as bungalow town.  Around twenty movies were made in the town and the airport including Rogues of the turf. The Old Fort was a regular set and was used by the Sunny South film company.

Tim Loughton MP  chair of The Ropetackle Centre Trust says “ We are working hard to  make our film programme appeal to all ages and tastes and it is now up to the community to come and support the Centre and make sure our brand new arts and education centre flourishes, and to give us your ideas as to what you would like to see on the programme too. Better still why not get involved with thenew Film Club or volunteer for one of the many other exciting areas we need help with.”

Thursday and Sunday film screenings in the first season feature The Queen,  Miss Potter, The Last king of Scotland and Hot Fuzz and the fabulous Bad Film club who’re showing Anaconda with their own commentary. There’s also a Saturday morning children’s film show on 6th October.

Tickets either online at www.ropetacklecentre.co.uk or via The Dome ticket office 01273 709709.
