Adur Festival 2007 - Walking The Way PDF Print E-mail
Written by Marion Standing
Adur Festival 2007Bigger and better is the best way to describe the exhibitions planned for the Adur Festival at both parish churches in the centre of Shoreham. Last year St. Mary’s pulled in the crowds with its “Passed to the Future” art exhibition and now over 50 local artists have signed up again – this time to produce work in paint, drawing, glass, wood, ceramics, photography, textiles and sculpture on the theme “Walking the Way” – everything from the “Path of Life” to tramping the South Downs!

Described as an exploration of pathways, journeys and pilgrimage, the exhibition has a new and exciting feature in the form of a unique “Mystic Rose” labyrinth, specially designed and painted by local artist, Maggie Organ. This will cover the entire floor of the St. Georges Chapel in St. Mary’s and, like pilgrims in medieval times, visitors will be able to meditate while they follow the path to the centre and back, taking a few minutes to appreciate the stillness of the ancient church.

If activity is more your thing, then head for St. Nicolas’s church where you will find a display from 12 national and local societies who encourage walking and the outdoor life. You will find plenty of inspiration here for outings during the summer ahead and each stand will have useful leaflets for visitors to take away.

Both churches have disabled access and activities have been planned with children specially in mind. Group visits are welcome and can be booked in advance. Admission is free.

Both churches will be open daily throughout the Festival (June 2nd to 16th): St. Mary’s - 11.00 to 5.00 (Sundays 2.00 to 6.00) and St. Nicolas’s - 12.00 to 4.00
