Guitars on the Beach is now an established date in the calendar. It is a musical event that brings musicians and craftsman together on Shoreham Beach, West Sussex for a full day of all things guitary! The event, this year on Saturday 16th September, was originally the idea of David Whiteman (one of Europe’s leading guitar makers) and his friend internationally renowned concert guitarist Richard Durrant. We came up with the idea whilst swimming round the estuary.
Where better to hold an event about our favourite subject than on home turf? says David. The event centres around the Church of Good Shepherd with a free guitar exhibition in the hall and music workshops taking place in the church itself. The exhibition will feature David Whiteman demonstrating guitar making techniques such as bending and rosette making, guitar historian, collector and author Jim Westbrook with some of his instruments, and event sponsor Guitar Junction (Worthing) who will exhibit a large number of beautiful guitars of many types from many eras. All will be offered for sale at special event prices for the day only. A special guest has also just been announced to take part in the day. Patrick Eggle – master guitar maker to the likes of Midge Ure and Oasis and Brian May. Partick comes down from Shropshire especially to join in. He will also be running guitar set up workshops at Guitars on The Beach. Richard Durrant, who last summer played at the BBC Trafalgar Square proms event and more recently enthralled the audience at a sell out solo concert at Lancing College Chapel, will be running workshop masterclasses for guitarists during the day. Richard says "We have space for six players of any style or level, beginners to professional. We'll spend time during the day chatting and playing. Anybody is welcome to come into the church to watch, listen and ask questions as part of their day wondering around the exhibits and all free of charge! There is a fee for the players who should email

for details". This year singer/songwriter Mark Allen will be running a workshop on the art and the craft of songwriting. All details are on www.longman-records.com There's also a solo recital from Richard in the evening in the Church of Good Shepherd beginning at 7pm. Says Richard "My concert will be purely acoustic and will last just one hour in the church itself. After that there's an Open Mic Party in the church hall. I hope that players from the day will want to take part, especially those who have new songs to play after the wonderful Mark Allen songwriting workshops! This will be the climax of this years "Guitars on the Beach". David Crozier from Worthing's specialist store The Guitar Junction says it's a unique event in the Guitar calendar. Guitars on the Beach is driven solely by the enthusiasm of those taking part. We gather to share our passion for the instrument in all its forms. The event grows from that passion and will continue to develop as long as people love the Guitars on the Beach. Current national news items report that the guitar has never been so popular. Guitars on the Beach is further proof of that! For Guitar fans you can come along and look at the exhibitions and guitar workshop free of charge between 10am and 5pm. There'll be food all day in the church hall served by the fantastic Beach Dreams Café. For information and bookings Tel. 01273 453422 or book online from www.longman-records.com . Additional information can be found on www.richard-durrant.com The Richard Durrant and Mark Allen workshops are priced £30. Places are limited.
